KARL ELLER
Currently
Chairman/CEO of Eller Media Company, the recognized leader in
the out-of-home advertising industry. The Company operates in
32 major metropolitan markets across America and is a wholly
owned subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, Inc. Mr.
Eller serves as a member of the Clear Channel Communications'
Board of Directors, a publicly traded media company with
outdoor, radio, and television properties.
Mr. Eller became
Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of The
Circle K Corporation on July 3, 1983 and resigned those
positions and from the Board of Directors on May 7, 1990. In
that time, he built Circle K into the second largest
convenience store operation and the largest publicly owned
convenience store chain in the United States. He built the
Company from 1221 stores in 11 Western states to 4641 stores
in 32 states (and an additional 1386 licensed or joint venture
stores in 13 foreign countries). In the year before he became
Chairman and CEO, Circle K's annual sales were $747,000,000;
in 1989, Circle K's sales exceeded $3,400,000,000 with net
earnings of $15,500,000.
After receiving his
B.A. in business from the University of Arizona, he served in
various capacities with Foster & Kleiser Outdoor
Advertising Company from 1952 to 1960. From 1960 to 1962, he
was an account supervisor for Needham Louis Brorby. Mr. Eller
subsequently purchased the Arizona operations of F&K,
renaming the company Eller Outdoor Advertising Company.
In 1968, he merged
his company with an operator of a television and radio station
to found Combined Communications Corporation (CCC) in which
Mr. Eller served as President and Chief Executive Officer. He
built CCC into one of the largest and most profitable media
companies in the U.S. CCC owned and operated 7 major
metropolitan television stations, 14 major metropolitan radio
stations, 12 American and 2 Canadian outdoor advertising
companies and 2 metropolitan daily newspapers. In 1979, he
merged the company with Gannett, Inc.
In 1980, Mr. Eller
became President and Chief Executive Officer of Columbia
Pictures Communications and served in that capacity until he
was instrumental in the merger of Columbia Pictures into the
Coca-Cola Company, USA.
Mr. Eller serves on
the Board of Directors of Clear Channel Communications, Inc.,
Traffic Audit Bureau, The Advertising Council, Inc., American
Advertising Federation, El Dorado Investment Company, Phoenix
Suns, Fiesta Bowl and SunVen Entertainment Group, Inc. He is
formerly a member of the boards of Directors of Inter-Tel,
Inc., Pinnacle West Capital Corporation, The Circle K
Corporation, Eastern Airlines, Swensen's Ice Cream Company,
The Public Broadcasting Corporation of America, Southwest
Forest Industries, Columbia Pictures, Inc., and Turner
Broadcasting Company.
In 1983, Mr. Eller
established and funded The Karl Eller Center for the Study of
the Free Enterprise Economy at the University of Arizona. In
mid-1987, the University of Arizona named its business school
for Mr. Eller.
